They have been recruiting Billy Bob to play at one of them big football universities and I sat in while the coach talked to Billy Bob. Now Billy Bob may look a bit slow, but he has some good common sense and he asked that coach some real good questions.
Like he asked the coach how much did he make a year and the coach said $4 million a year. That just about knocked me out of my chair. That there is a lot of money for teaching kids to tackle each other. Then Billy Bob asked that coach how much did the university make each game. And the coach said that it was about three million dollars.
Well, knock me out of the chair again!
So I did some quick figuring and that football progam at that big college makes about $20 million a year. Billy Bob would be rich!
But that ain’t the way it works. Billy Bob asked what he would get paid and the coach said nothing, but Billy Bob would have the honor of playing in from of 100,000 people every Saturday. Well I was right proud of Billy Bob when he said that he would rather have some of those millions, seeing how he was the one people were paying to see play.
And then Billy Bob asked if any of them fans would be getting hurt. And the coach said no. And then Billy Bob asked if any of them coaches would be getting hurt. And the coach said no. And then Billy Bob ask if anyone collecting all that money would get hurt and the coach said no.
So Billy Bob just sat there doing some thinking and he said that it didn’t seem right as the only one who would get hurt was him. But he was also the only one not getting any money.
But that coach did not miss a beat and he said that Billy Bob will get an athletic scholarship. Well that interested Billy Bob as he thought that meant four years of free college. But the coach said it wasn’t quite like that. They gave out scholarships for one year at a time. And Billy Bob that didn’t make no sense as college was four years, but the coach said that iffen Billy Bob got hurt, it would be best for the football team if they took away Billy Bob’s scholarship and gave it to another player.
Well that got Billy Bob to pondering again and he asked a right smart question. He asked how many of them football players graduated and the coach said about 30 percent. So Billy Bob did some more figuring in his head and said that it sounded might stupid to him that the players got their scholarships taken away if they got hurt, that over 70 percent of them players never graduated and the players, who got hurt, never saw any of them millions of dollars.
But the coach bucked right up and told Billy Bob it was worth the sacrifice as he might make the pros. And Billy Bob done asked another smart question – how many of them college football players made the pros. And the coach hemmed and hawed and said that about one percent made the pros.
Well Billy Bob is really doing some figuring now and he points out to the coach that if you have a football team of 100 players, only one of them makes the pros.
Anyhow, that football coach done left and Billy Bob is still trying to figure out why he wants to spend one year in college getting beat up and getting no money while them other fellows are making millions. He is still pondering on it.
