Does anyone else feel like I do, believing reality television has gone too far over the edge? Have we as television viewers become so bored with the norm and accepted the breakdown in society’s morals that we’re demanding more trash in our reality shows, in the example of the, Jersey Shore? The, Jersey Shore, on MTV, has ratings that are through the roof. MTV reports it is the highest rating show for ages 12-34 in the past eight years.
Why can’t Snooki and her gang of misfits just go away? Will they only be a fleeting moment of fame, enjoying fame for absolutely contributing nothing to society? MTV continues to run, “Jersey Shore,” several times through the week. I admit, I have watched, Jersey Shore, with my mouth hanging open, thankful that my own children aren’t performing on national television in such scenes of annoying, shocking disarray. Are viewer’s watching with the same sense of disbelief?
This past week Jersey Shore’s episode featured, Snooki having sex in a room with some guy she picked up at a club. Snooki’s roommate was in the room on another bed, while Snooki was having sex, or getting, “smushed,” as they called it. Later on J-Woww and Snooki cleaned the, “smush room,” wearing plastic coverings as they cleaned. Snooki recently was arrested and charged due to disorderly conduct in public, due to alcohol intoxication. Sammi and J-Woww had a brutal physical cat fight, but no-one was arrested. Mike, the Situation, revealed his, “six pack,” several times. Ronnie decided to grind his pelvis into the back of Sammi’s head. Of course clubbing, “fist pumping,” drinking, cursing, verbal and physical altercations, and picking up casual sex partners, (Some females are called, “grenades.”) is usually on the agenda of, Jersey Shore.
The, Jersey Shore’s full cast includes; Snooki, Angelina, DJ Pauly D, J-Woww, Ronnie, Sammi, Vinny, and Mike the Situation. They all indulge in horrendous behavior as they live together for the summer. Spray tans, clubbing, drinking to excess, casual sex, and the minimum of clothing, are all requirements to be in the cast. Put in bizarre raging arguments and physical fighting encounters, and you’re viewing out of control young adults who people eagerly watch.
The, Jersey Shore cast, earn their great salaries just because they’re party animals. Clubs eagerly seek out cast members to promote their businesses, and cast members can earn absurdly amounts of cash just by being present at functions or events.
The Jersey Shore cast, are treated like royalty as they walk the red carpets. Does anyone else see anything wrong with the way the public encourages these young people? They’re being praised and rewarded for their outrageous behavior. I’ve yet to see the Jersey Shore cast represent themselves as people who do something to give their generous services to disadvantaged members of society, or should I say it’s not positively portrayed in their reality series.
Jersey Shore may be representative of the mindset of our young adults in today’s society. As adults do we encourage this type of youthful behavior, and help make heroes out of these foolish young adults? Reality series producers are adults who control what’s revealed on reality television. They supply us with reality shows like, Jersey Shore, Bad Girls, Real World, or even, Jon and Kate. We’re voyeurs waiting to see people crash and burn for entertainment, makes our lives appear so much better in hind sight.
I personally don’t feel Snooki and her band of misfits on Jersey Shore will fade away too soon. Mike the Situation, is now appearing on, “Dancing with the Stars,” continuing to show his rock hard abs. Until television viewers grow weary of senseless behavior on reality series, the dramas will continue.
