After talking to a Microbiologist over Thanksgiving dinner, I was alarmed to hear that the grapefruit I love to eat may be making me sick. Especially because when I was pregnant both times, I ate a grapefruit a day to get rid of pregnancy related constipation. As it turns out, grapefruit may not be as healthy as I thought and here’s why.
Grapefruit may interfere with the body’s ability to metabolize certain medications including both prescription and over the counter medications according to the Mayo Clinic.
Some studies suggest there may be a link between consuming grapefruit and breast cancer although other studies have disproved that grapefruit may cause cancer. Clearly, more research needs to be done on the grapefruit cancer link.
Grapefruits, as well as, oranges, lemons and limes may also destroy the enamel on your teeth which may cause cavities, tooth sensitivity and tooth breakage. While one or two citrus fruits a week is not likely to cause much harm to tooth enamel, drinking a glass of grapefruit juice a day or consuming a sliced grapefruit a day may be a cause for concern.
Fresh, ripe grapefruit is packed with vitamins and are so good for you. As always, the key to good health is moderation.
