Before the season started, the popular pick to represent the NFC in the Superbowl was the Dallas Cowboys. On paper, the Cowboys have one of, if not the most talented roster in the league. In Tony Romo and John Kitna they have a strong quarterback and back up. They boast a solid receiving corps that features Miles Austin and first round pick Dez Bryant, not to mention a suddenly rejuvenated Roy Williams. Jason Witten although banged up is still an all world tight end. The offensive line is a bit shaky, but by no means the worst in the league. The defense has one of the premier pass rushers in Demarcus Ware and Keith Brooking is a leader on defense. Felix Jones and Marion Barber represent a formidable running back tandem. So, with all that said the question remains…What’s wrong with this team?
Look no further than the top. Jerry Jones has been a big part of the problem. Jerry has a huge ego that gets in the way of his coaching staff. He ran legendary Jimmy Johnson out of town and Bill Parcels didn’t ever seem to unpack his luggage. He only seemed to get along with the coaching staff when they were minions hell bent on doing his bidding. Case in point being former coach Barry Switzer and current coach Wade Phillips. I don’t think that it’s any small coincidence that the Cowboys were classic underachievers during the tenure of Switzer or Phillips. If you’re the babysitter and you tell a kid not to eat the cookies and then mom comes around and gives you a dozen sugar cookies, the babysitter has lost all respect and credibility. The kid will never listen to her again and that’s what’s happened in Dallas. The kids are outta control and its Grandpa Jones’ fault!
Not to say that Jerry should fire himself because Jerry Jones is good for football and his team. The Cowboys are one of the most valuable franchises in sports and they have arguably the most technologically advanced stadiums and practice facilities in the league thanks to Jones. He is certainly not afraid to open up his large wallet and pay the coaches and players that he feels give the Cowboys the best chance to win, but his involvement should stop there. Let the coaches decide who starts and what plays to run. During the draft, go play golf or hang out with the grand kids. You shouldn’t be running your draft war room and the first person new players should talk to should be a member of the coaching staff. I can’t imagine Bill Gates calling a new accounts payable manager and welcoming him to Microsoft. Unfortunately for Wade Phillips, the damage is done. Is he a good coach? I don’t know because it was always Jones calling the shots. What we do know is that this team is undisciplined and reckless and giving Cowboys fans everywhere migraines and until Jones tempers his ego this will continue. Thank god I’m a Saints fan.
