Did you know employees work harder for Recognition than they do Money ! Lessons I learned.
As a corporate CEO, I did not start out that way.
Small Business needs leadership more today then ever. Being the Boss is a huge challenge. You have to be an expert in everything: personal finance, business advice and sometimes even be a Shrink. Well, that is important but not the answer. Some of the smartest people in the world work for other people. So all you have to do is surround yourself with geniuses. The true talent is listening.
Today with everyone tightening their belts because of this bizarre economy, we must cut-cut-cut. Is this really the answer ?
CEOs do not get fired, they fire or lay off people to keep that bottom line in the black. That is all the stockholders care about. Their question is: “did I make money today .”
According to Sarah Anderson with the Institute of Policy Studies on an interview on Democracy Now, “CEOs are making more money today then ever before.” She talked about Mark Hurd who was CEO of Hewlett-Packard and has been in the spotlight lately because of his extra curricular activities. But what was not talked about was how he laid off 30,000 people while earning his $ 20 million a year salary. That is about $700 per worker by saying “you’re fired.”
So for you small business owner’s ( entrepreneurs ) who want to adapt the title of CEO. Here are some suggestions.
Start a weekly email newsletter. Talk about your employees… new ideas , their hobby’s, their life outside work. Continuously encourage new suggestions. Always recognize your team players.
Be the perspective officer you should be. Effective leadership begins with you, it is contagious. Hire a good marketing director, make sure he is an expert in Internet marketing. That is a very impotent key to make everything come together. No sales, no dinner !
Research…What are the people you are competing with doing ? All this information is available to you with a click, use it. Take a strong look a Video Marketing, people are getting lazy, they want to see and listen more then read.
Join the Toastmasters……It’s fun and a productive way to, get away. You will learn, most likely new leadership methods and it is a good way to do networking. Public speaking is a confidence builder and another method of selling.
Do not kill yourself ! Good CEO’s do not have heart attacks.Stress is good if you do not max out with it. Eat right and stay healthy. We all know that, but do we do it ? Working all the time is not good balance for your life. Do not forget your family, if you have problems there it will reflect on your performance. Learn to delegate, you do not have to do everything yourself ! That is at home and at work.
So now you can call yourself a Corporate Officer or better yet a Friend to your employees. Remember more impotent then all this…. On this short trip we have called Life….”.Live everyday as if it’s your last, because someday you will be right ! “
