If you have interacted with enough human beings, you realize that they come in varying degrees of intelligence, communication skills, niceness, and volume, and this realization of variety alone may be enough to make you wonder: Why would anyone take a job in retail?
Besides the relatively low pay, potentially dead-end career prospect, boring day-by-day operation, and not quite a glamorous lifestyle, the primary reason that retail is often regarded as such a dreaded employment field is the simple fact that retail employees have to deal with customers, and customers can be unpleasant. People do not always have common sense, nor can they always understand basic instructions, and many are outright rude, even mean. Yet, when wondering why would anyone take a job in retail, there actually are a few possibilities.
For the same reason that teenagers may take a job flipping burgers or other desperate folks take odd tasks here and there, the basic fundamental force at work is an economic culture that demands everyone has an income, or they will be unable to purchase even basic needs. It may not be the job they want, but some will go into retail just because they need a paycheck.
As an extension of need, some potential workers definitely need the money, but there is still room to wonder why they would pick retail as their profession of choice. In reality, many people lack the education to choose a more specialized field, and must settle for a gig that requires a minimal skill level, under which many retail positions qualify.
Yet perhaps the rarest of reasons why anyone would take a job in retail is the potentiality that they are genuinely customer-oriented, and sincerely do enjoy interacting with all the customers. These precious few in the workforce are a valued commodity, perhaps underappreciated, considering their pleasant effect on the environment around them. Retail, believe it or not, actually may be the true calling for some looking for work.
Whether the economy is strong or weak, whether joblessness is at a record high or record low, people will continue to wonder: Why would anyone take a job in retail? Maybe the most important insight into that question is to recognize the valued diversity of our human population; for some, retail may not seem a nightmare, and is merely a differing preference, just as some prefer crunchy peanut butter over creamy.
