There are positive shows for children on television and allowing your child to watch TV is not a bad thing. Everything should be done in moderation and television viewing for children is harmful when it is not limited. Parents who use TV as a babysitter are not teaching their children healthy habits and with the rising obesity rates among our children, there are more reasons than ever to find alternative entertainment to TV.
Many parents will sit their child down in front of the television because they have other things that they need to do and therefore are using the TV as a babysitter. If a parent prioritizes their time correctly, they can do things when the child is asleep and try to involve their child in the other tasks that need to get done.
Children want to learn and are very willing to help out with chores around the house. If you typically let your child watch TV while you prepare dinner, why not shut off the TV and bring your child into the kitchen. If you use your imagination, you can find ways for your child to help in preparing dinner. It might take a little bit longer to get dinner on the table, but in the meantime you are teaching your child how to cook and also bonding together.
Another alternative to TV is to allow your child to develop their creative abilities. Whether you provide them with arts and crafts supplies or a simple jar of play-doh, children need to have an outlet like this.
On a hot summer day instead of being outside in the heat, put your child in the bathtub. Give them lots of cups and toys to play with and sit and enjoy them having fun in the water.
Another alternative way of entertaining your child is to put on some music. You can give them pots and wooden spoons so they can tap along with the beat. Most children love music. It doesn’t have to be “kid” music either. Put on whatever you like and allow your child to get their energy out by dancing and having fun. Make sure to join them in this fun activity.
There is nothing wrong with sitting down and watching an educational program or even the occasional cartoon. The problem is that when that is all a child does for entertainment they do not learn how to make their own fun.
These are simple ideas for alternative entertainment to TV. Your child might enjoy if you introduce them to something that you like to do. Gardening, painting or other hobbies can be altered to be age-appropriate for most children. You will be teaching your child as well as giving them options to fun things to do.
