Microsoft is catching lots of flack online for increasing the prices of their online gaming service Xbox Live, but if you look closely at the Xbox 360, you’ll notice that across the board, the Xbox 360 is much more expensive console than the PS3 or Wii.
The current prices for online gaming on the three current gen systems are as follows: Nintendo Wii: “Zilch”; PlayStation 3: “Zip”; Xbox 360: $60-$120 a year. Wait, wuh? So do you mean to tell me that the Xbox 360 is the only current gen console to charge for online gaming? You betcha, and not only that, Microsoft just recently raised the XBL prices.
The PlayStation 3 is currently the most expensive gaming system that you can buy in retail stores, but when you factor in everything the PlayStation 3 offers, the Xbox 360 is by far the most costly console – the Nintendo Wii isn’t even a contender. The 250GB Xbox 360 currently costs the same as the 160GB PlayStation 3, but the PS3 has an inbuilt Blu-ray player, free online gameplay, and built-in Wi-Fi support. To get the added features of the PS3 on the Xbox 360, you’d definitely pay a lot more than $299.99 in retail stores.
The Xbox 360 hard external hard drives and official USB flash drive are ridiculously expensive. A 250GB external hard Xbox 360 costs a whopping $130 and the official Xbox 360 16GB USB flash drive will run you an additional $70, while the PlayStation 3 can run on standard 2.5″ SATA hard drives -250GB for around $60 – and won’t require expensive USB flash drives – once again, the Nintendo Wii is still not a factor.
Add-ons and Peripherals
The Xbox 360 gets even more expensive when you factor in the added peripherals and add-ons that you’ll need to enjoy the 360 console. Xbox 360 Wireless Adapters cost $99+, added hard drive space can get expensive, and extra Xbox Live accessories like MS Points, Xbox Live Starter Kits, and Xbox Live Gold subscriptions will drive the costs of owning an Xbox 360 up a little further. In addition to normal add-ons, the Xbox Kinect will cost 50% more than the PlayStation Move – making the Xbox 360, the most expensive gaming console on the market.
