Being a freelance writer, I always have someone asking me what it is that I write about. I tell them what I write and then when they seem interested I tell them where they can find my website. Until recently I didn’t realize how much of a pain it is to give people my information. Usually it involves scrounging for a pen and a piece of paper or a napkin, whatever works.
It never really occurred to me that having business cards would come in handy for these occasions. There are a couple reasons for why I never thought of it. For one, I don’t get out of the house much and you have to actually meet people to give them a business card. And second, I am one of those people who second guess myself, so I didn’t think I was a “professional” who would need business cards.
Recently, I took a trip across the country and on this trip I had a two hour layover while I waited to change planes. Since I have gotten older and I work at home, I have become sort of anti social when it comes to interaction with people. But, at each air port while I waited, I forced myself to talk to people and be friendly instead of burying myself in a book. Well it’s funny how this worked out, because I can’t tell you how many people asked for my card.
Ugh. Darn it, I don’t have business cards. I tried to give out the information anyway and the little pieces of paper my information was written on will probably end up at the bottom of someone’s purse or pocket, then get mixed up with traveling garbage like gum wrappers on their way into the trash can.
A business card would be much harder to mistake for garbage. Also, when someone is going through their purse or pockets and comes across a business card, they give it a second look and are more likely to access your work. Having a business card also appears more professional, in my opinion.
That is why I believe all writers should carry business cards.
From now on I will carry business cards in my purse. In the long run it will be more than worth the small cost of having some made.
Even here in the little town I live in, I will be able to advertise more efficiently and professionally.
