There are many reasons why everybody in America should tune in and watch CBS’ The Good Wife, starring Julianna Margulies, Chris Noth, and Josh Charles. And one of the reasons you should watch The Good Wife is to experience the dynamic love triangle that exists between Alicia Florrick (Margulies), her husband Peter (Noth), and her coworker William Gardner (Charles), and the way in which these terrific actors play that tension.
The Good Wife has charged Julianna Margulies with portraying a very difficult and delicate character: Alicia Florrick, a woman whose husband – in a high political office – cheats on her. But despite his infidelity, Florrick chooses to stay with her husband. That’s a difficult line to walk believably as an actor, and it’s a hot-button role given today’s political climate.
Fortunately, Margulies is more than up to the task of playing the embattled Alicia Florrick, striking just the right balance between confidence, strength, showmanship, and vulnerability. And Margulies does an excellent job with the give and take of Alicia’s divided loyalty to her husband, Peter, and her suppressed desire for her coworker, Gardner. Plus, Margulies has great chemistry with both Chris Noth and Josh Charles.
I’ve been a fan of The Good Wife’s Chris Noth since he hit the national spotlight as the charming, irreverent, and sometimes diabolical Mr. Big on HBO’s Sex and the City. Noth’s Peter Florrick has some of Mr. Big’s swagger and style, but none of his other redeeming qualities – leading viewers to believe that Peter Florrick is certainly capable of committing infidelities and crimes again.
With his slippery, ingenuous Peter, Noth makes this love triangle tricky for viewers. We see the dangerous dualities and sneakiness in his personality, and we don’t always understand why Alicia chooses to stay with Peter Florrick.
Especially with William Gardner around.
As William Gardner on The Good Wife, Josh Charles strikes just the right chord as Alicia Florrick’s intense coworker and employer. Charles plays Gardner with enough similarities to Peter (like sliminess) to make Alicia’s attraction to Gardner make sense. But Charles simultaneously imbues Gardner with a good-heartedness and intensity that allows us to understand why Alicia’s attraction to Gardner is so powerful.
With three extremely talented actors in Margulies, Noth, and Charles, the fully-charged love triangle that has emerged on The Good Wife is one of the many reasons that viewers should watch the show. It’s heartbreaking, heart-stopping, exciting, and wrenching all at once, and only one of many reasons you should tune in to The Good Wife.
