NEW YORK — As election day approaches, Voters are trying to decide who they will vote for this time around. So many issues are on the table and the people want results. Education is a crucial subject and close attention must be paid to it to make things better. Graduation rates in New York fluctuate from the low to mid percentile of students which is unacceptable. There are many obstacles young people go through climbing the ladder to graduation out of school. In many schools there is a lack of concern from school staff for our children. Some teachers are in the educational system just for the money and whether or not the students get anything from the time spent in their classrooms is irrelevant to them.
Planned budget cuts for public education is also an issue for New Yorkers. Of all the places our government can take money from, they look toward cutting funding for public education. Is this right? Not at all! We say over and over that we believe the children are our future so why do we push their education aside? It is time for the teachers to take educating our youth seriously. The future of our society rests on the shoulders of the youth giving the teachers an important role to play. Many of the students attending public schools are minorities. Aside from attending school, many of these students go home to drastic financial issues, single parent households, abuse stricken situations, homelessness and other hurtful situations.
If we take the time to make sure our children get a quality education, a better future will be in store for them. We have to make the educational experience more exciting and welcoming to our children while still being cost efficient. We also have to take care of our teachers who are really about giving students quality education. Which candidate for New York State governor can come in office and work toward improving things for our youth? Anyone can make a promise and not keep it. New York needs change and we need it now. The children are growing up very quickly and before we know it their high school graduation arrives. We have to ensure that the time they spend in school is worth while. Candidates Carl Paladino and Andrew Cuomo give their stance on education reform and both present an interesting argument. Which of these two can deliver what New York needs for our educational system? You decide and get out and vote New York! Our children are our future and this one vote can be life changing for them.
