When it comes to badly-behaving celebrities, we often quick to move on; forgive and forget. Yet members of the public are having a tough time forgiving Mel Gibson. The once-celebrated actor shocked everyone as he was recorded hurling insults and threats at the mother of his 1-year-old daughter earlier this year. The expletive-laced tapes left even grown men feeling taken aback, not to mention disgusted. Gibson’s words did not sound like those of a frustrated man but a monster. Furthermore, allegations that he hit the mother of his child add to the repulsion that currently surrounds his image. Judging from the tapes, one would certainly think Gibson capable of violent behavior, maybe even much worse.
In my opinion, the public does not know how to regard Mel Gibson at this point. We are confused and disturbed. He demonstrated behavior that was so extreme and beyond what we could imagine for an everyday individual, much less a celebrity. The statements made by him are dehumanizing, and with them it’s quite possible that Mel Gibson went beyond the point of no return. Hollywood has shown backlash over the possibility of him appearing in films after the scandal, hence his cameo in “The Hangover 2” being scrapped one day after it was announced.
Just recently the “Lethal Weapon” actor gave a sworn declaration for the Los Angeles County Court in which he gave his version of what really happened on January 6th, 2010. His testimony left spectators wondering if the religious actor would be willing to lie under oath. In the declaration Mel reportedly said that Oksana Grigorieva was the raging lunatic that night, describing her as swinging Lucia back and forth while they argued, eventually carrying her as she ran around the backyard in a fit of rage.
Mel also told, “I slapped Oksana one time with an open hand in an attempt to bring her back to reality. I did not slap her hard, I was just trying to shock her so that she would stop screaming, continuing shaking Lucia back and forth.”
“I did not hit Oksana with a closed fist, as she alleges. I did not ever punch her in the face or in the temple or anywhere else, not then or at any other time.”
After the release of the audio tapes in early 2010, pictures of Oksana Grigorieva’s reported injuries surfaced on the internet. Allegedly taken at her doctor’s office, the photos show Oksana’s two front teeth as having significant damage. Some people did not believe these to be legitimate, but others were both outraged and saddened. The pictures reinforced something we as the public did not want to believe: That Mel Gibson was a deplorable human being, capable of punching the mother of his child in the mouth. Combined with the audio tapes, we cannot forgive Mel Gibson. We feel offended and betrayed, and as far as I know there isn’t anything that could change that.
