Here’s a unique party idea: host a Wine and Pasta Sauce Tasting party. You supply the location and pasta types, and invite your friends to pair their favorite wine with a matching pasta side.
When thinking of your pastas, try to be a little original. Don’t choose just one pasta type, but get a variety: rigatoni, penne, germelli, or even tri-color fiori will make this a unique gathering.
Once you have your location details, and your pasta choices, inform your friends of the party. There are many online services that you can use to invite them:
Tell your friends to bring a bottle of wine, and a pasta sauce. The wines will be voted on overall taste, and pairing combination. The sauces will judge much like the wines – overall taste and pairing successfulness. Prizes will be awarded for the top wine, the top sauce, and the top combination.
You can create two sided scorecards for the attendees to vote with.
For the wine cards, include the following categories, and rate them on a scale from 1-5 (5 being the highest):
SIGHT Rate: 1 2 3 4 5
CLARITY : cloudy, bitty, dull, clear, brilliant
DEPTH OF COLOR: watery, pale, medium, deep, dark
COLOR: (white wines) green tinge, pale yellow, yellow, gold, brown
(red wines) purple, purple/red, red, red/brown
VISCOSITY: slight sparkle, watery, normal, heavy, oily
AROMA Rate: 1 2 3 4 5
GENERAL APPEAL : neutral, clean, attractive, outstanding, off (e.g. yeasty, acetic, oxidized, woody, etc.)
FRUIT AROMA: none, slight, positive, identifiable
BOUQUET: none, pleasant, complex, powerful
TASTE Rate: 1 2 3 4 5
SWEETNESS : (white wines) bone-dry, dry, medium-dry, medium-sweet, very sweet
TANNIN: (red wines) astringent, hard, dry, soft
ACIDITY: flat, refreshing, marked, tart
BODY: very light & thin, light, medium, full-bodied, heavy
LENGTH: short, acceptable, extended, lingering
BALANCE: unbalanced, good, very well-balanced, perfect
For the sauce cards, include the following categories, and rate them on a scale from 1-5 (5 being the highest):
PRESENTATION Rate: 1 2 3 4 5
TASTE Rate: 1 2 3 4 5
SMELL Rate: 1 2 3 4 5
GENERAL APPEAL Rate: 1 2 3 4 5
Then have them rate each pairing individually. If there are a eight entries, have them rank the pairings 1-8 (one being the best).
Don’t hold your partygoers in suspense! Announce the winners as soon as possible, and have a fun little presentation, and perhaps even award them prizes. This makes for a fun night, and a different way to bring people together!
