Now that fall is upon us and we are beginning to swim less it is time to start thinking about winterizing the swimming pool. Protecting one’s investment is important and doing it properly can save one money and time at start up.
Here four suggestions on shutting down an above ground swimming pool for winter:
Suggestion 1: Clean the swimming pool well before shutting it down. This will ensure there is no inanimate debris in the water. This can eventually form algae and make opening the pool a little harder.
Suggestion2: Remove the skimmer and the filter and plug the holes with plugs that were provided when the pool was purchased or purchase them from a pool store. After removing the pump and filter take them into the basement or another place they can be stored. This will keep them safe and also keep them from freezing during the winter months.
Suggestion 3: Chlorinate the water by purchasing a floater that can be placed under the pool cover and add several chlorinating caps to it this will help keep the swimming pool fresh and clean after it is covered. Try to place the floater in the middle of the pool away from the pool walls as it can discolor the wall and possibly cause damage by making the wall brittle.
Now one can chose to add nothing to the pool remember being cheap and working hard seem to go hand in hand when dealing with pools.
Suggestion 4: Invest in a good swimming pool cover that will fit the size pool one may have. The correct size is important as the cover may slide off if it is too small or too large to fit properly. This defeats the purpose of covering the swimming pool to start with.
Before covering the swimming pool one may want to put floats or the pool ladder in the middle of a vinyl pool to help support the cover
The purpose of covering the pool is to keep out leaves and other debris to hold down on algae growth. This also holds down on vacuuming when the pool is ready for opening.
Maintaining a swimming pool is a lot like maintaining a car they both require maintenance at certain intervals to run smoothly. Taking care of small matters today will hold down on large matters tomorrow. Winterize your pool properly and it will take care of itself
