You make handcrafted jewelry because it’s bold and artsy and different from anything you can buy in a store; but you also want to make a simple statement sometimes. That’s exactly what you can do with this simple bracelet. It’s bold and it’s got simple, circular style. It’s easy too. Just learn to make these simple open spirals. Connect them together and you’ll be flashing your circular style in no time at all.
-Hammer & block (Optional)
-Sand paper, metal file or use a thick emery files from a beauty supply store.
-16 gauge wire
Create 6 Open Spirals
-Cut 6 pieces of wire 6 inches long each
-Use your round nosed pliers to make a loop at one end
-Create a swirl but don’t coil the wire tightly. Keep it open. (illustration #2)
-Bend the last half inch of wire to a right angle over the spiral. (illustration # 2)
-Optional, Hammer your spiral to flatten it. Hammering one piece of wire on top of another can weaken your piece. If you hammer it, don’t bend the angled end all the way. Bend it slightly, hammer it, then finish bending it into place.
-Hold your round nosed pliers about 1/8 inch below the angle
-Curve the wire backwards then loop it around the wire. (illustration # 2)
-Tighten the loop.
-Smooth the rough edges with sandpaper or a file
Make Figure 8s
You will connect your open spirals together with figure eights. The bracelets in the illustration show 3 figure eights between each open spiral. You may use 2 or 4 if you prefer.
-Cut 17 pieces of wire 1&1/4 inch long each.
-To create your figure 8s, follow the instructions in “Make a Wire Bracelet Even a Grandma Could Love.”
Make a Shepherd’s Hook Clasp
The above article also has instructions for making a Shepherd’s hook clasp using 2 inches of wire.
Connect it all Together
-Connect your open spirals together with your figure eights
-Add your clasp to your bracelet with two figure 8s.
-Use another figure 8 to make a simple catch at the other end.
A Few Tips
-If you want your open spirals to be bigger, try cutting your wire pieces 7 or 8 inches long.
-If your bracelet is too big or small, change the number of spirals, more for a bigger bracelet, less for a smaller bracelet.
-You can also make size adjustments by making your figure 8s smaller with shorter pieces of wire.
-You can make your open spirals in different sizes and put them together to make a necklace.
-Use open spirals to create a pair of earrings. Make them simple or dangle wire shapes and beads from the bottom.
