Elyse Frankcom nearly died this past weekend off the coast of Perth, Australia when a shark attacked her during a group snorkeling event. Frankcom was inside the shark’s mouth when Trevor Burns, a guest on her swim-with-the-dolphins tour, stepped in to help. Burns grabbed the shark’s tail which in turn caused it to release its grip on Frankcom.

It’s simply one of those stories that warms the heart and restores faith in humanity. Apparently, Burns was not willing to watch this woman he was snorkeling next to die so he did what he could to help save her.
Frankcom described the attack to the Sunday Times in Perth stating, “I felt the force of being kind of pulled to the side … and then I looked and saw a grey figure in front of me. I felt me inside its mouth – it was horrifying. There is a lot of people that don’t make it and a lot of people don’t survive.”
Thus, after hearing Frankcom’s horrifying account of the incident, it further elucidates the sheer bravery and selflessness of one man who was willing to risk his own life to try and save another.
Doctors placed over 200 stitches in Frankcom’s leg and buttock to patch her up.
Elyse Frankcom is only nineteen years old yet realizes how lucky she was to have survived the attack. She later wrote on her Facebook page, “Wat doesnt kill u only makes u stronger!”.
The man who is credited with saving Frankcom, Trevor Burns, was able to meet with the young survivor later. It was a rather tearful and emotional exchange with Frankcom stating, “Thank you so much, thank you so much … my hero.”
As Frankcom held onto him, Burns replied, “Anytime, okay?”
