Woman cave. I don’t care for the sound of that at all. Is there something less…manly? What about grotto? There is something so primitive and secretive about grotto. Ok then that’s what we will call it – a woman’s grotto. Now when I picture this space I vacillate between stark modern and shabby chic; however– stark modern as much as I love it, belongs in living room not a woman’s grotto. Thus I will turn this space for women only in to a place heaped with books, drowning in fabric with luscious textures and earthy colors. I picture eclectic art from curious ink illustrations to small family portraits of family you don’t even know.
This room needs to have the correct lighting that suggests rustic style with a female twist. How about antlers dripping with crystals? And a small sofa in Tiffany blue velvet contrasted with a throw made from recycled remnants of gently used saris. Make sure these are fair trade pieces whose profits go back to the community of artisans who created them. Add a paper mache deer head for earthy madness or a zebra for global panache. To add to the wildlife charm I can’t resist this pillow from Anthropologie that features a 12 point buck made with colorful fabric sewn onto a wooly pillow. For décor on another wall hang this fabric tapestry from Urban Outfitters that features a room with a view rendered by simple illustration.
In addition to a sofa we will need a side chair…something elegant yet comfortable and decidedly feminine. And again I’m going with Anthropologie on this one. A conservatory chair upholstered in a cotton fabric and embroidered with hothouse flowers. Oh the charm from this piece is compelling and genuine…taking me away to country farmhouses and upscale Nantucket getaways.
What about storage? This is not an office so stay away from straight lines without shape or texture, instead choose a dresser cast off and lonely from a second hand store. Be sure that it’s structurally sound; paint it in milk paint blue or vanilla crème and sand down the edges and corners exposing the raw wood beneath. Complete this piece by lining each drawer with scented paper. The Container Store offers shelf liner in three scents including Blue Water, Herbal Cucumber and Evening Garden. Use this lovely storage piece for books, blankets, cd’s and your yoga mat. And speaking of music..this room is for relaxing and music goes along with relaxing just as much as peas go with carrots. Choose an iPod player that recharges your player as it is docked. Now create a playlist of sounds that encourage and promote a sense of calm…inviting you to curl up with your blanket and read a good book or flip through a magazine.
Finally add a side table with a table lamp like this vintage metal bird cage lamp on Etsy. And use your side table as a place to set your tea, place your magazines or delicately balance a glass of wine.
This room will be completed by not adding a certain accessory – yes ladies – this room does not have a television. Because this room is all about you…your imagination, your comfort, your style.
