Virtual companies have a standard by which they must operate or risk failure. Just as you have expectations of the organization in which you wish to work, they have expectations of you. If you wish to work at home you must understand the premise by which each of these companies operates.
Experience is required for some work at home positions. Such requirements should be listed in the job description or job advertisement. Experience ensures the company of your ability to meet job expectations. If you do not have the necessary experiences then please do not apply.
A PC or Mac is essential to work at home. A company will determine hardware and software specifications and list them in the job advertisement. Please be sure your system meets the necessary specifications before applying for the position. Time is of the essence once the application process starts, delays in processing your application due to system modifications or failures may end in termination.
Most companies require DSL or Cable internet to support company software. DSL is through your phone line and Cable is through your cable company. If your ISP is wireless or satellite based such as those services provided by Hughesnet or Wild Blue you DO NOT qualify. Satellite services are not as reliable; if you are working in customer service, sales, or telemarketing you will experience frequent disconnects and system time outs. This causes excess customer service issues for most companies.
A background check is a common expectation of work at home companies. The work at home company is liable for the safety and security of client information. Breach of security may lead to potential law suits.
A schedule is a necessity whether required or not. Discipline is one of the biggest challenges to work at home agents. The ability to separate the line between work and family is a thin one. A strong schedule ensures the agent meets weekly goals. As well, many companies will test your scheduling abilities throughout the application process; it helps the hiring company determine if you are capable of setting goals, following directions, and seeing them through to completion.
A controlled environment free from distraction and background noise allows the agent to focus on the task at hand and ensures professional delivery of services.
Many phone operators are required to get a USB VOIP headset because it delivers smooth sound free from interference. An analog headset is cheaper but sound quality is compromised. The difference between an Analog and a USB VOIP headset is the analog has two prongs and often plug into the back of your system and a USB VOIP headset has a square end and plugs into one of the many USB ports found on the front or back of your system.
