World of Warcraft gamers have been discussing the Cataclysm expansion for most of a year. For the most part, it was nice to see the WoW Trade channel littered with something besides not so witty comments about n00bs and huntards. With so long a wait, players naturally reverted back to arguments, jokes, and occasionally an item or two offered for trade.
Now that Cataclysm has an actual release date, discussion should tick up again.
If speculation is allowed, much of the Cataclysm conversation should center on returning players to Azeroth. Since the Burning Crusade, higher level players and any who could get a port from friendly Mages or a Summons from Warlocks spent a good amount of time off planet. Wrath of the Lich King brought players back to Azeroth, but mostly for Dalaran as the home port of choice. Northrend became the popular playing zone. Cataclysm brings us back to the home zone, and one wonders if the changes mean some achievements become unavailable.
Post Cataclysm Azeroth Achievements
World of Warcraft Cataclysm promises a return to Azeroth starter towns and forgotten zones. Players with a sense of nostalgia might want to revisit these areas, perhaps work on that World Explorer Achievement, because Cataclysm promises a brand new experience. Some of those zones won’t look anything like WoW players remember. When the Cataclysm occurs, it happens for everyone, even those who are slow buying the expansion.
It’s hard to imagine To All The Squirrels I’ve Loved Before bidding a final farewell, but not impossible. Go /love some furry critters in Azeroth before the Cataclysm puts them at risk.
Tastes Like Chicken might be an even more unique experience. What do Worgens feed their guests? Might there be a post Cataclysm delicacy or four?
It seems more likely that Cataclysm will affect quest Achievements. The Lore Master Achievement could get an assist after the Cataclysm, since it relies on number of quests, not specific quests. Hemet Nesingwary: The Collected Quests however, may not be so easy if Stranglethorn suffers radical changes – and it will.
Grizzly Hills isn’t classic Azeroth, but the Grizzled Veteran Achievement may still be off the list after the Cataclysm.
Quests like Guardian of Cenarius and The Diplomat may change. Gurubashi Arena will almost certainly change, but we can’t say for sure.
And that is the point. While waiting for Cataclysm, players should remember those Azeroth Achivements. Some may not be available once Deathwing rises.
