If you are an article writer, you probably already know that you can find article ideas all around you. There are opportunities for a new article idea literally everywhere you turn. Once you learn this, you will be able to find these opportunities and make them work for you. One of these opportunities is with your family. No matter what type of family dynamic you have, there are opportunities everywhere for articles to be generated from the family.
One way to get article ideas is by writing about the problems or challenges that your family faces from time to time. The problem that some writers face with this is that they do not want to offend anyone and they do not want to release personal or private information about themselves and their families to the public. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to throw away all of those ideas for articles. In fact, you can find new and creative ways of still writing these ideas without offending or embarrassing anyone.
One way to do this is by not writing in the first person. You don’t have to say “me”, “I” or “us” when writing about the problem and in some cases, it’s actually preferred that you don’t. Avoid the personal experience piece and stick with the facts and suggestions on what worked for you and what might work for the reader. For example, you don’t have to say “My son wet the bed at night until he was 11”. Instead, you might say that some children are prone to bedwetting problems even as they grow older. Then you can give some medical expert facts or quotes on the matter and then follow up with tips and suggestions that you tried to help the problem.
Another way to handle this type of situation is to change the names and write as if you are telling the story of another family. For example, “The Smith family had just gone through a rocky divorce and their four children were struggling with dealing with the aftermath”. You can then tell the story without revealing the privacy of certain people. In this case, particularly if you do it too soon after the issue has happened with you, there are still going to be some people who may know that you are referencing your own family. Use this option just as you feel comfortable with it.
Be open with your family about your job and what and how you write about things that are close to the family. Tell then what you want to do to prevent offending or embarrassing them and also ask them to share with you what they are and are not comfortable with. Respect their opinions as well and keep this in mind when writing your articles.
