Whether you got to watch tonight’s event or just need a recap, you know my recaps are the ones to read.
The WWE presented Hell In a Cell 2010 live from Dallas, Texas on October 3, 2010. Here’s what went down.
Triple Threat, Submissions Count Anywhere Match for The United States Championship: John Morrison v. The Miz v. United States Champion Daniel Bryan
Winner: The United States Champion Daniel Bryan
Before the match even got started, The Miz went on a tear because he believes he is the only one with star quality and still believes that he did not tap out (not sure what match he thought he was in).
At the start of the match it was Morrison and Bryan against the Miz, but remember that a submission can happen anywhere in the arena. We all know that aliances such as that easily come and go. At another point, the action has even spilled out into the WWE Universe as Morrison and The Miz go through the crowd delivering blows to each other. Remember that while Morrison and is pretty good at submissions, The Miz is not and Bryan is the submission expert of the three.
Near the stage, Morrison ran The Miz backstage to concentrate on Daniel Bryan. But then The Miz came back an equipment crate and nearly ran over Morrison. It even came to a point when The Miz did a skull-crushing finale on Morrison while they were on the floor. Morrison wakes up and climbs up the lighting to pounce on The Miz and Daniel Bryan from a height of about 15 feet on the stage area. If you didn’t see this live, you have to see the replay.
And just when it looked like The Miz was going to submit at the hands of Morrison, Alex Riley, The Miz’s apprentice ambushed Morrison and then Bryan shoved Riley into one of the cameramen. Daniel Bryan is able to put in the LaBell lock and make The Miz tap out again.
Commercial break: “Legendary” on DVD starring Danny Glover, Patricia Clarkson, and John Cena.
Hell in a Cell Match for the WWE Championship: Sheamus v. WWE Champion Randy Orton
Winner: WWE Champion Randy Orton
You might think that Randy Orton has the advantage in this match because Sheamus has never been in a Hell in a Cell match, but Sheamus has proved that he is just as vicious and threatening as Randy Orton. He has accomplished much in his short time in the WWE but Randy Orton definitely has the experience. It looks like Sheamus is going to go for pinfalls as often as possible.
Sheamus had taken apart the steel steps but Orton was able to evade the steps. Orton rams Sheamus in the steel cage of the cell numerous times before getting Sheamus in the face with the steps. Later Sheamus was able to send Orton face first into the cell. And just like that, Sheamus is in the control of the match. He has even removed the cover of the turnbuckle to inflict more damage to Orton. Orton sees what’s coming and turns the tide on Sheamus for a little bit. Sheamus then focused his attack on the ribs and midsection of Orton by laying him across the steel steps.
It is obvious that Orton is injured but he is doing his best to create space to get the momentum going that he needs to win this match. And with a backbreaker, the viper is coiled and ready to strike but Sheamus was able to counter the RKO. Sheamus brought the steel steps into the ring but Orton was able to do a scoop slam and plant Sheamus on those steps. That should have been the end of it but Sheamus was able to reach out of the pin. These two superstars are really pushing their bodies to the limit in pursuit of this WWE Championship. And even with a kick to the jaw by Sheamus, Orton was still able to kick out of the pin.
Now that Sheamus is frustrated to no end, he reaches for a chair from under the ring and begins to beat Orton with it but still can’t get the pin. And with an RKO, Sheamus rolls out of the ring to give himself a break. Orton went to punt Sheamus in the skull but he was able to move out of the way and deliver another boot to the face Orton. Back in the ring Orton is still able to kick out of the pin. And with an RKO into the steel steps, Randy Orton retains the WWE Champion.
The next WWE Pay Per View Event will be Bragging Rights on October 24th.
Backstage with Josh Matthews and the NXT Season 3 Diva rookies. However, their time in the spotlight was interrupted by the Nexus, believing that they will be victorious tonight. Remember that if anyone from the Nexus interferes in tonight’s match, then John Cena automatically wins and the Nexus must disband.
Alberto Del Rio comes out and starts talking about how he is better than everyone. And blah, blah, blah. Then Edge comes out to remind us that he is on a crusade to rid the WWE of anything that is stupid. And just when it looks like the two are going to fight, out comes Jack Swagger saying that it’s stupid that he does not have a match tonight and complaining about his mascot’s medical bills. The three start going at it and an email comes in from the anonymous Raw general manager. Edge must apologize tomorrow on Raw to the anonymous GM and now Edge must face Jack Swagger.
Edge v. Jack Swagger
During the match we find out that Alberto Del Rio sent Christian into surgery with a torn pectoral muscle and a broken bone. It looks like Christian will be out for awhile.
Before the match, Edge was hit from behind by Alberto Del Rio and hasn’t really had his head in the match but he has recovered. Swagger continues to go for an ankle lock on Edge’s left ankle, the ankle where he had a torn achilles tendon that took him out for six months before he came back to win this year’s Royal Rumble. Swagger had the ankle lock locked in outside the ring but Edge was able to counter and send Swagger flying into the steel steps.
Even after a drop kick from the top rope, Swagger was still able to kick out of the pin and during the match another cameraman went down. It’s a bad day to be a WWE cameraman. Edge is able to kick out of a gut-wrench power bomb. The ankle lock is back, Edge goes for the rope but Swagger drags him back. Edge rolls out and is able to deliver a spear to deliver the win against Swagger.
Commercial break: Public Service Announcement to remind kids not to try at home what the superstars do on TV
Backstage with the Nexus. The have a plan that will apparently circumvent the ruling that they cannot get involved in the match or Wade Barrett is disqualified. The leader of this plan is David Otunga. He says he didn’t have time to discuss it with Barrett before his match.
John Cena v. Wade Barrett for the future of the Nexus
Winner: Wade Barrett
Just a reminder of the stipulations of the match. If John Cena wins, the Nexus must disband. If Wade Barrett wins, John Cena must join the Nexus. However, if any member of Nexus interferes with the match, John Cena automatically wins.
We don’t get far into the match before the Nexus comes out and gets to the bottom of the stage area. Barrett is angered by this but I’m still not sure what Otunga’s plan is. But they did provide enough of a distraction to help Wade Barrett turn the tide of the match.
The Nexus goes to surround the ring right as Cena goes for the five knuckle shuffle and many superstars come out of the locker room to remove Nexus from the ring area. Now it’s back to Cena and Barrett with the entire WWE Uinverse waiting on baited breath for the outcome.
Cena has not been able to land an attitude adjustment but what was even more impressive was Cena kicking out after that. Cena finally gets an attitude adjustment and Barrett is able to kick out of that as well. What is it going to take to end this match?
Just as Cena has an STF locked in and looked like Wade Barrett was going to tap out, a fan tried to come into the ring and security and the official was able to get him but then another fan came with a pipe and hit Cena from behind giving Barrett the win. That must have been Otunga’s plan all along.
The crowd is still speechless. I can’t believe this happened. The WWE Universe is still behind John Cena. The real fallout will come tomorrow night on Raw.
Commercial break: Paper Jamz, the official sponsor of Hell in a Cell.
Backstage with Josh Matthews looking for The Undertaker. However, he does find Paul Bearer. He wants to know why he has returned after a 6 year absence. He says he has his own master plan and that Kane will never be the Father of Destruction’s favorite son.
Commercial break: We get to see how the WWE Superstars help out with the Make a Wish Foundation.
Unified Divas Championship Match: Unified Divas Champion Michelle McCool v. Natalya
Winner: Natalya via disqualification
Michelle does have something to fear from Natalya because she can overcome Michelle’s athleticism because she has been trained in the Hart family dungeon and can and does employ the sharpshooter submission move.
And with Layla at ringside, there is a definite distraction. Michelle has a height advantage but Natalya definitely has an advantage with her lower center of gravity and strong legs.
Natalya could have put it away earlier but the ref was distracted by Layla’s interference. And despite Michelle McCool tapping out, she had already been disqualified due to Layla’s interference. So even though Natalya won, the championship cannot change hands on a disqualification or count out. I’m looking forward to seeing this match up again as I’m sure Natalya will win.
WWE World Championship Hell in a Cell Match: The Undertaker v. World Champion Kane
Winner: World Champion Kane
The action got underway in this match before even began with Kane attacking The Undertaker before the bell even rang. It took awhile before they got into the cell and the officials were able to lock the door and ring the bell. Paul Bearer is, of course, outside of the cell with his urn looking on.
Kane has already compromised the knee of The Undertaker by squashing it between the post and the steel steps. Despite both brothers putting it all on the line, neither has been able to get the real advantage over the other. That is including The Undertaker being able to choke slam Kane. But it’s as if the choke slam had no effect.
This match seems to be taking more out of The Undertaker than Kane because nothing seems to phase him. Kane with the tombstone piledriver but The Undertaker was able to kick out. And out of frustration, Kane smacked the official and he is down. The other officials are rushing to the aid of the referee and the open door has allowed Paul Bearer to sneak in the cell. With a new official, Kane turns his attention to Paul Bearer and is being forced into the ring by Kane. Kane tells him that he shouldn’t have come back and he should have stayed buried.
With his back to The Undertaker, Kane doesn’t see him rise up and he delivers another choke slam to Kane. This is the beginning of the end for Kane. But with the lights down, Paul Bearer opened up the urn and a light came out blinding The Undertaker keeping him from doing the tombstone piledriver. Bearer hands Kane urn and he hits The Undertaker on the head with it. A choke slam later and Kane retains the championship.
Is this the end of The Undertaker? We’ll have to wait until Friday to see what the fallout from this match is.
