You are important! You are important! Go ahead and say it, I AM IMPORTANT! I AM IMPORTANT! I have value. I am valuable to myself and other people.
In the classic film, It’s A Wonderful Life, Peter Bailey has given his life for the people in Bedford Falls that they might have opportunity to own their own home. At his death, the slumlord of Bedford Falls, Mr. Potter, moves quickly to shutdown the Bailey Savings and Loan. The only thing that will save the fledgling savings and loan is if Peter Bailey’s son George will assume responsibility for its management.
This creates a challenge for George who has for all of his life dreamed of world travel, becoming educated, and becoming a builder of skyscrapers. Faced with this dilemma, George agrees to defer his dream. He does not go to college but his brother Harry goes in stead of him.
They make a great plan. When the younger brother finishes college, he will run the building and loan and George’s dream will continue. When Harry returns home from a successful collegiate football career, he also brings home a wife whose father has offered Harry a great job. George decides he cannot stand in the way of this opportunity for his brother.
Although he is stuck in Bedford Falls, George succeeds in his work helping the poor to escape the misery of poverty and existence in the slums of Potter. World War II comes and George is still in Bedford Falls. Harry becomes a hero by shooting down enemy planes that were attacking U.S. ships.
On the day Harry is to return home for a hero’s welcome, George’s uncle loses the savings and loan’s deposit. It ends up in the hands of the wicked Potter. $8,000.00 is missing. George’s world crashes around him. He may even face prison if convicted of mismanagement and embezzlement. He gets drunk, yells at his family, and finally humiliates himself by asking Potter for a loan with only the equity of his life insurance as collateral. Potter tells him that he is worth a lot more dead than he is alive.
George leaves and goes to a bridge to jump in and commit suicide when another person jumps in first. By instinct, George jumps in to save the other person’s life. This is his guardian angel, Clarence, who has been sent to save George. If he is successful, he will have earned his wings.
After learning who Clarence is, George concludes he has gone crazy. He wishes he had never been born. Clarence grants George’s wish.
George had the privilege to observe what many of us may have been guilty of wishing for at low points in our lives. When allowed to observe where he lived without having been born, Bedford Falls had never existed. The town was named Pottersville.
There were no houses developed because the Savings and Loan had gone bankrupt. His brother George had drowned as a little boy because George had not been there to save him. Because George had died as a child, he would not be there as a pilot to protect the ship carrying soldiers. They had all drowned at sea during air attacks. He had no home, no family, and no history.
George prayed one more time to get his life back. He would accept responsibility for it, no matter the consequences. On return to his home, all the people who he had helped own their own home came to his rescue. All brought money to save their friend George Bailey. His love for them and their families had prompted a great outpouring of their love for him. In the end, all was well for George and Bedford Falls. The angel Clarence got his wings.
What do we have opportunity to learn? We are all important even if we sometimes don’t think so.
YOU ARE IMPORTANT and life would not be the same without you. YOU ARE IMPORTANT because your presence alone has made the difference in many lives that you may never know about. YOU ARE IMPORTANT because you bear the gift of life in yourself and are also a gift to life. We would not be the same without you. No matter how great our challenges appear, the opportunities within our challenges are golden doors opening to help us discover, IT IS A WONDERFUL LIFE and YOU ARE WONDER FULL!!!!!!
