No Pit bull or any other animal is born naturally aggressive, and anyone who believes that is a sorry excuse for a human being. Stereotyping a pit bull by its name or appearance is no different than assuming every person wearing baggy pants and a sideways cap is going to shoot you, or that every person of Asian ethnicity has a high IQ and likes to crunch numbers.
I have personally owned 3 pit bulls in my life, all from different bloodlines and different backgrounds. All three have been the absolute best dogs anyone has ever met. None of them have ever been aggressive or even had a mean bone in their body. All three of them acted exceptionally well around children, and even other animals. All three of them exhibited amazing loyalty and demeanor, and never once stepped out of line in any way contingent with the poor reputation the breed has been affiliated with.
I currently only own one pit bull as the other two have passed away. One died from old age; she lived to be thirteen, and the other was the most loyal dog I have ever owned. People like to criticize the pit bull as being a deadly and dangerous animal but they couldn’t be more wrong. Scarface was only four years old when is loyalty to me caused him to lose his life. See, this so called dangerous animal never sunk his teeth into anything other than some Purina and a bone or two.
One night around 2 am or so Scarface and I were out for a late night walk when someone attempted to rob me, Before the confrontation began I commanded Scarface to sit and he did so loyally even while watching his owner struggle with two different men attempting to have their way with me, he wanted to help I know he did but his training told him to obey me. To make a rather long story short a gun was pulled and fired at me, however instead of the bullet striking me, that so called killer of a dog jumped in the way and took the bullet meant for me killing him instantly saving my life and giving his. There is not a doubt in my mind that if it wasn’t for him I would be dead.
This is a rather sad story and it brings tears to my eyes to just think about it, no less write about it but it is stories like these that show just how good these animals can truly be. I know it sounds like something out of a movie but it really happened, and there is a good reason all three of my pit bulls have been so loyal, trustworthy, and non aggressive. It’s all in the training they receive as they are raised, and that’s what determines whether your dog will be a mean killer or a loving and loyal family pet.
Whenever an animal attacks it is always caused by something. Sometimes people instigate the situation directly, and sometimes the dog just wasn’t trained right. Any dog has the capability to be a killer, just because pit bulls have been used for fighting in the past it doesn’t make them a killer. If you want to talk about family history Scarface’s father was a fighter who lost his life in an illegal fighting operation. Yet, he never once showed aggression.
Pit bulls do not know how to fight until they are trained to do so, and neither do humans. The point I’m trying to get to is how many people have parents who were trained killers and fought in the many wars this country has been involved in? My father killed time and time again in Vietnam but that doesn’t make me a killer. If you really think about it people have caused more aggressive deaths than any animal ever will. You criticize so called bully breeds well when you really think about it the human race is one big bully breed, yet were not scared of our neighbors or the guy working behind the gas station counter, but we are scared of the dog sitting behind that fence down the road.
Some dog breeds are naturally more energetic than others, humans are the same way. You stop a dog’s aggression by giving it something to do. Take it for a run, give it a bone to chew on, take it somewhere secluded and let it run and drain the energy it has. Think about it logically for a minute if you sit around and do nothing all day chances are you start to get fidgety and uncomfortable as boredom sets in, and dogs are the same way all the way from collie to pit bull and all breeds in-between.
The first argument you have after reading this is going to be somewhere along the lines of humans don’t do aggressive things like dogs do, but we have television to watch, games to play, and the freedom to go do a number of things that keep us occupied and our energy level on a controllable level. However dogs require us as humans to provide them with these activities as they don’t have the freedom or ability to do most of the things we do.
Next time you feel like criticizing a pit bull or any other breed of dog for its actions skip it, and criticize the owner for not raising it right. Most people in this world are the way they are because of how they are raised and animals are no different. You raise a human with good morals; teach it loyalty and respect, and your end result will be a grown child who will be successful, and believe it or not the same thing goes for dogs of any breed. There are plenty of people that come from families with a bad past; a grandfather who was a rapist; or father who is spending his life in prison for murder yet they still grow up to be successful law abiding citizens.
If you ask me there is one hell of a double standard when it comes to the way we view pit bulls because of their ancestor’s history. Maybe we should lock up every child that’s a result of rape or every child of a murderer because that’s what their family did, I mean why not? We treat the pit bull in that way to the point they are put down for absolutely no reason because of their bad aggressive history. You call it natural meanness or aggression; I call it naturally energetic and the lack of ability to use that energy in a good way because some humans just don’t know how to train such a breed.
