Today I was watching one of the cable news channels when they were reporting on the story of Hurricane Igor slamming Bermuda. During this segment, they showed a clip where there was some man who had decided to take advantage of the gigantic waves and go surfing during the storm. I became a little irate when I saw this because I was thinking of what his family would say or do if something fatal happened to him. Whom would they try to sue because their son decided to ignore common wisdom and catch such a “gnarly” wave?
When I was growing up, my mother used to insist that we all sit very still and quiet while God was doing his work. We would sit and turn out all of the lights and turn off the television and radio while it was raining, lighting and thundering. My mother used to tell us that as with those who love plants and flowers, God was watering his garden which is the earth and while he was doing this, we needed to show a little respect by staying still and quiet. Personally, I do not go that far with my kids but I do insist that they show God the proper respect by getting out of the way while his will is being done. I do insist that they sit down somewhere and remain calm until his work is completed.
It could be argued, I suppose, that this may be a little extreme for most but I would have to say, just like our laws, the Bible is based on interpretation. Ones interpretation does not make that particular individual or group right or wrong and theirs should never be forced on another who may interpret it completely different. I find this prevalent with many who say that “this is what God wants or this is what God said”. I find it quite difficult to believe that they and they alone have the inside track to God. Unless there were a “burning bush” in their past, I can not see god only speaking to them and no one else. Trying to tell others just what God wants or is saying, in my opinion, is playing with God and that, to me, is a giant “NO” in any religion. Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
