Living a purposeful life is a big part of creating your own blue zone. The blue zones are areas involved in a National Geographic study where people live longer than the rest of us. One thing the people of the blue zones have in common is living a purposeful life. What does living a purposeful life mean? They all feel they have a reason for living and they live to carry out their purpose.
When speaking of a purposeful life, we are not referring to monetary success. The people of the blue zones concentrate on making a positive difference in society. Whether their purpose is to be a role model or to contribute in other ways, they know their spiritual place in life. What’s more, they are content with their identity, no matter how humble it may be. Whether healer, mother, poet or leader, they are not ashamed of their purpose, they embrace it.
No Rat Race
By removing money from the blue zone equation, we also remove the intensity of a money driven existence. In modern society, we often achieve ourselves to an early grave. The people of the blue zone strive to lead a purposeful life but they do so with a calm demeanor. They are in no particular hurry because they have already accepted themselves for who they are and are living a day to day lifestyle that reflects that identity.
You are More Than your Job
If you ask the average American to describe themselves, a great many will use their job to describe who they are. Sometimes your purpose is the same as your job, but not always. For instance, I am a writer by trade, but my purpose in life is not to write, but to help and educate people, so they can help themselves. Very often I help people through my writing, which is one of my talents, but by definition, I am not a writer. I am a caretaker. I take care of people. That’s my purpose in life and I accepted it long ago. You are more than your job, but your job can help you carry out your purpose.
We all have dreams. Some are of monetary success, such as winning the lottery. Others are more spiritual in nature. Living a purposeful life means fulfilling those dreams in a way that serves your life’s purpose. For instance, if I were to win the lottery, I would be sure to use my financial gain to help and educate others. If I were to buy a home, I would share that home with the people I love. I would use it to fulfill my purpose in some way. To ignore my purpose and keep everything for myself would create negativity in my life. I would feel unfulfilled and unhappy.
Finding your Individual Purpose
We all have an inherent longing to be needed. Human beings all have a purpose. Ignoring that fact and leading a money driven life leaves us empty and depressed. Many people go their whole lives without realizing the purpose of their existence. Your individual purpose in life is usually staring you right in the face. We are not talking about talents here, although talent does play into purpose to some extent. Your purpose is the thing that makes you happiest as a contributing member of society. Live according to that purpose and live a longer healthier life.
