So many people are offended by so many things; low cut shirt, religious disposition, loud colors, political persuasion, bad breath; the list just goes on and on. One of the underbellies of our modern American world is those offended by prostitution. Prostitution has been around a long time and it’s not going away any time soon. Quite the contrary as now more people have access to resources, information is more freely passed, and images, video, and testimony all come out of the woodwork with more ferocity than ever before. Just ask Tiger Woods. But now, there’s a new thing going on in Zurich which may be able to put an end to people being so offended while keeping the working folks working and keeping customers happy; drive in sex boxes.
Sex Box Surprise: As reported in The Daily Mail (1) “police in Switzerland are planning to build a series of drive-in ‘sex boxes’ to allow prostitutes to conduct their business in more privacy.” Apparently already in use in the German cities of Essen and Cologne, these sex boxes are a smart addition indeed. Getting the action off the streets benefits everyone, especially the residents who live adjacent Zurich’s red-light district. Their constant complaining about prostitutes can be tuned out.
Do you want fries with that: Sex boxes are “made from simple metal fencing and are wide enough for those seeking the services of a prostitute to park their car.” Much the same way that fast food purveyors like McDonald’s made the drive-through the popular way to get your burger on, these drive in sex boxes seem the perfect way for people to get the satisfaction they need without any of the hassle.
Contained Chaos: As police spokesman Reto Casanova told the Daily Mail, “‘We can’t get rid of prostitution, so we have to learn how to control it.'” While control may not be the word I’d use, I could definitely see the benefits of containment. You’re getting girls off the streets, you’re letting police stop seeking this garbage out, and you’re funneling in a built in revenue stream. If you have to pay forty dollars an hour for these things (and have the option for fifteen minute increments or whatever) that money can all go back to local governments. Moreover if you’re also “sanctioning” prostitution to go on in these devices, then you’ve got a place the prostitutes can ‘work’ which will work to their benefit in the end. While some prostitutes may look to something like big brother watching where they do what they do as a bad thing, the fact is that a lot of the danger in the act is eliminated if people know they’re being ‘watched.’ Yes taxes will eventually come (can you imagine the day when you can put on your resume, “former career: prostitute?”) but just wrapping our heads around the fact that prostitution is here and it’s not going away may help some judgmental high minded moralists get over themselves.
